Once upon a time a man by the name of Miles Cramer was standing in line to audition for the MTSU jazz band with no previous drum instruction (except for symphonic band in high school). Also waiting in line was a guy playing John Scofield leads on his guitar. He introduced himself as Matt Hajacos. They started talking about their mutual love for Medeski, Martin and Wood and traded phone numbers. They began getting together after class and improv in the style of mid 70's Grateful Dead, and A Go Go, the record John Scofield put out with MMW. Over time, Matt started proposing his own compositions. They were interesting hard driving, lushly arranged songs, as if Tom Waits and The Flaming Lips got together to make Christmas music. They searched out other musicians to fill out the parts. They took what ever they could get. At the height of complexity, it was Matthew Hearn (Turbo Fruits) and Miles both on full drum kit, Matt Hajacos on guitar and vocals, Zach Powers (All We Seabees, Rock N Roll Hooligans) on bass and Amy Smith (The Protomen, Happy Birthday Amy) on keys and vocals. After Amy and Miles left the band for endeavors with their own project, Happy Birthday Amy, Hajacos, Hearn, and Zach Powers set out looking for a new keyboard player.
Zach Powers and Aaron Irons both had a music class together at MTSU where one day after class Zach asked Aaron to come over and try out playing keys with the group. Over the next few months the group expanded their sound, Aaron's keyboard rig (at one time including 3 keyboards, a computer, theremin, and a whole slew of effects) and musical ability began to grow.
The Vermicious K'Nids, possibly named The Mechanical Bears at that time, began playing shows. Over a year later, and with the addition of another piano/guitar player, Ben Weber (Darla Farmer), and after everyone had finally moved to Nashville, Zach Powers and Matt Hearn both left the band to join other projects and Matt Hajacos approached Miles Cramer and another local bassist, Steve Jones (Dr. Dook, The cable Company), to fill the empty positions. Miles and Steve agreed and the band took its present state, Matt on vocals and guitar, Ben Weber on keyboard, vocals, and guitar, Aaron Irons on synth keyboards and Steve Jones on bass. Where the sound was more of a LSD era Beach Boys meets Flaming Lips back in Murfreesboro, the sound now became more of a straight ahead rock band with a vintage pop sound. The K'nids is a meeting place of 5 guys coming from 5 different directions in music all centered around the excited mind of Matt Hajacos. |
